We all "know" when we should be losing weight - maybe not to get to the stick thin levels of our favorite TV celebrities, but at least shed a few pounds. But have you really thought about what being overweight is doing to your life? "Why lose weight?" is a question that you HAVE to answer before you can really be successful in your weight loss!
Your "why lose weight" is key to your weight loss, because it is uniquely personal to you. This one requires a bit of thinking, but if you get this down - it will carry you through the worst of temptations with no effort at all. You will be able to resist any amount of your favorite chocolate without a twinge! If, however, you find that you really don't have a strong "why lose weight" - that's OK too - it just means that now is not the right time for you, so stop worrying about it and enjoy life!
Here are a few suggestions for you to think about - but don't be general with your why! What exactly is it that you want to change and WHY??
First up is health. Obesity is the number 1 killer in the US, and that is spreading throughout the world. Did you quit smoking and gain weight? Being overweight kills more people than smoking does! That doesn't mean you should start smoking again, but if that was a strong enough reason to quit smoking - maybe this is the drive you need to lose weight too.
Then what about your wealth? Being overweight is EXPENSIVE!! Once you start to gain weight, you tend to continue on that path. So you are always buying new, baggier clothes as you expand. Then there are the effects on your health - from the antacids you have to eat in the beginning to control that heartburn, to long term medications and care for the heart disease and diabetes that are much more likely with extra weight.
A big "why lose weight" is confidence. Do you tend to hide in the back of the crowd and hope no-one notices you? Or are you completely the other way - hoping that by being incredible loud and outgoing, no-one will notice it's an act? When you feel good about you, you have confidence with other people - and that pays off in relationships, career, negotiating your new car - confidence shines through in all those areas and many more!
Finally - energy! There is a huge world of experiences out there - and if you are too tired to do anything other than lift the remote every night: you are missing out!!
So - did you find your why yet? If you did - your next step is to get started on a solid weight loss program. But get that why written down first and keep it with you. Then, any time the doughnuts come around, you can just look at that why and stay on track!
